Choose the method that suits you. Your old computer keeps its files until you delete them.
Option 1: Windows Backup (easiest, Windows 10 or 11)
- On the old computer, open the Windows Backup app and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Back up your folders, settings and the list of installed apps.
- When you set up the new computer, sign in with the same Microsoft account and choose Restore from this PC when asked.
Option 2: OneDrive
- On the old computer, sign in to OneDrive and turn on backup for Desktop, Documents and Pictures.
- Wait until syncing has finished.
- On the new computer, sign in to OneDrive with the same account. Your files appear automatically.
The free OneDrive plan holds 5 GB. Microsoft 365 plans include 1 TB.
Option 3: External drive or USB stick
- On the old computer, open File Explorer and go to
C:\Users\YourName. - Copy the Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music and Videos folders to the drive.
- Plug the drive into the new computer and copy the folders into the same places.
Don't forget
- Browser bookmarks and passwords: sign in to Chrome or Edge on both computers to sync them.
- Email: web email (Gmail, Outlook.com) just needs signing in. For older Outlook desktop accounts, copy the
.pstdata files. - Programs need reinstalling on the new computer. Have your licence keys or account logins ready.
