Microsoft Office isn't included with our computers. Here's how to get it and install it.
Ways to get Office
| Option | Good for |
|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal or Family (subscription) | Always up to date, works on several devices, includes 1 TB of OneDrive storage per person |
| Office Home (one-off purchase) | Word, Excel and PowerPoint on one computer, with no subscription |
| Free web versions at microsoft365.com | Basic editing in the browser with a free Microsoft account |
| Through your school or work | Many schools, universities and employers provide Microsoft 365 free. Ask your IT department. |
Buy Office from Microsoft or a reputable retailer. Very cheap keys from online marketplaces are often invalid or get deactivated.
Install Office
- Go to microsoft365.com and sign in with the Microsoft account your Office purchase is linked to.
- Have a product key card? Redeem it first at office.com/setup.
- Select Install apps and run the downloaded file.
- When it's finished, open Word and sign in with the same account to activate it.
Moving Office from an old computer? Sign in at account.microsoft.com/services to install it on the new one. Microsoft 365 works on up to 5 devices per person. One-off purchases work on one computer at a time, so sign out of Office on the old computer first.
Says "Unlicensed Product" or "Product Activation Failed"? Open Word, select File > Account, and check you're signed in with the account that owns the licence. Sign out and back in if needed.
