Work out what's faulty
- Try another port on the computer.
- Try another device in the same port, such as a USB stick or mouse.
- Try another cable, especially for phones and USB-C devices.
- Plug straight into the computer, not a hub or dock.
If other devices work in the port, the problem is the device or cable. If nothing works in one port, the port may be faulty.
Fixes
- Restart the computer, not just shut down.
- Reset the USB drivers: in Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click each USB Root Hub and select Uninstall device, then restart.
- Stop power saving: search for Edit power plan > Change advanced power settings. Under USB settings, set USB selective suspend setting to Disabled.
- Check for dust or debris in the port with a torch, and clear it with compressed air.
- External hard drives may need more power than one port supplies. Use a powered hub or the drive's own power adapter.
USB-C ports aren't all the same. Some only transfer data, while others also charge or connect a monitor. Look for the lightning bolt (charging), DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbols next to the port.
