Most dock problems come from power, compatibility or out-of-date drivers.
- Power the dock with its own power supply. Workstation laptops need a 130 W or larger dock supply to charge through the dock.
- Match brands where possible. Dell docks work best with Dell laptops, and HP with HP. Mixed brands may charge but lose video or ports.
- Use a USB-C port that supports video. Look for the Thunderbolt or DisplayPort symbol next to the port.
- Update drivers. Install Windows Updates, your laptop's BIOS and the dock firmware from the manufacturer's site. DisplayLink docks (such as the HP USB-C Dock G2) also need the DisplayLink driver.
- Monitor blank or duplicated? Press Windows + P and choose Extend.
- Test the monitor directly. Connect it straight to the laptop to rule out the cable.
