Fans speed up when the computer is working hard, and a warm base is normal. Constant loud fans, or a computer too hot to touch, needs attention.
Improve airflow
- Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface. Beds, cushions and laps block the vents underneath.
- Keep vents clear. Desktops need 10 to 15 cm of space around their vents.
- A laptop stand or cooling pad helps for long sessions.
Clear the dust
- Turn the computer off and unplug it.
- Use short bursts of compressed air through the vents, holding the can upright.
- Never use a vacuum cleaner, because static can damage the components.
Reduce the load
- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check for apps using lots of CPU when you're not using them.
- Choose a quieter power profile: Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode > Balanced.
- Use your maker's thermal setting:
- Dell: Dell Power Manager or Dell Optimizer, set to Quiet or Cool
- HP: HP Command Center, set to Quiet or Cool
- Lenovo: Lenovo Vantage, Intelligent Cooling, set to Quiet or Battery saving
- Install BIOS and driver updates, which often improve fan behaviour (article 66).
Stop using it and contact us if:
- The fan grinds, clicks or rattles
- You notice a burning smell
- The computer shuts down from heat
- The battery looks swollen, or the case or trackpad is lifting
