Check the pen is compatible
Pens use different technologies and aren't interchangeable. A pen for one brand often won't work on another.
| Pen type | Works with |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) | Microsoft Surface, and many Dell, HP and Lenovo 2-in-1s |
| Wacom AES | Some Lenovo ThinkPad, HP and Dell 2-in-1s |
| Apple Pencil | iPads only. Check the generation matches your iPad. |
Check your laptop maker's website for the pens that suit your model. Pens aren't included unless the listing says so.
Quick fixes
- Charge or replace the battery. Pens use AAAA batteries or charge by USB-C.
- Check the touchscreen works with your finger (article 48). The pen needs a working touchscreen.
- Replace a worn nib. A flat or loose tip can stop the pen registering.
Pair the pen for its buttons
Writing usually works without pairing, but the buttons and eraser need Bluetooth.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth.
- Hold the pen's top button for 5 to 7 seconds until its light flashes.
- Select the pen when it appears.
Change the button actions in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
